Welcome to
The principal object of the Society is to foster interest in all aspects of the history of Saintfield and its surrounding district, including the geography, folklore, customs, dialects, place names, etc. of the area. 2006 14th September: SAMUEL NEILSON AND THE NORTHERN STAR 12th October: LORD MOIRA - What HORACE REID knows about the history of Ballynahinch could fill a series of talks. Tonight we will attempt to confine him to Lord Moira and the pivotal role his family played in that town and far beyond. 9th November: ARMAGH PUBLIC LIBRARY - Founded by Archbishop Robinson in 1771 this historic building is a true treasure house of the literary world, containing many rare and valuable books. CAROL CONLIN is responsible for its day to day running and will give us an illustrated insight into its rich history.
11th January: SIR JOHN LAVERY - The work of this well known Belfast born artist is perennially popular and the colourful story of his life will be expertly told, and illustrated, by JIM O'HAGAN who pays us a welcome return visit. 8th February: JIMMY KENNEDY - Everybody knows his music;
"Red Sails in the Sunset", "Isle of Capri", "The
Hokey Cokey" and "Teddy Bears' Picnic" to name but
a small number, but few know much about this modest Ulsterman himself.
8th March: "THE HEIGHT OF NONSENSE" - Not a talk for April Fool's Day but an account of a journey undertaken by PAUL CLEMENTS who sought to visit the highest point in each county in Ireland. Did he succeed and, if so, what else did he discover? Find out tonight 12th April: BEES AND BEEKEEPING - As the days lengthen, what could more pleasurable on an April evening than to listen to CANON JOHN BELL telling us about the intriguing and complex world of the bee. His talk has been greatly enjoyed by all who have heard it, so make sure you don't miss it. Followed by a brief Annual General Meeting 10th May: MEMBERS' NIGHT
