2009

10th September:

FOLLOWING LORD DUFFERIN TO HIGH LATITUDES - PROFESSOR JAMES NIXON provides a fascinating and illustrated account of the sailing trip which he took in 2006 from County Down to the Arctic to mark the 150th anniversary of the celebrated voyage undertaken by Lord Dufferin .

THE WATCH: EXPERIENCES OF IRISH LIGHTHOUSES - Father and son BILL and PAT POWER share their experiences of working as lighthouse keepers in various parts of Ireland and a way of life which has only recently become extinct.

12th November:

CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND - As Christmas approaches, JOHN KILLEN, Acting Director of the Linenhall Library, uses its resources to look at some of the more unusual seasonal customs and practices in Ireland over the centuries.

2010

14th January:

THE VIKINGS IN THE NORTH OF IRELAND - It wasn't all pillage and plunder! An expert in medieval antiquities, Dr CORMAC BOURKE, goes behind the popular misconceptions to consider some of the more positive effects of the many Viking incursions into the province in the 9th and 10th centuries.

11th February:
TALES OF COUNTY DOWN'S ROCKY HERITAGE - Dr TONY BAZLEY, a former Director of the Geological Society of Northern Ireland, takes an informal but informed look at some aspects of the natural landscape of County Down, and links these with pertinent observations on our modern built environment.

11th March:

THE ROWALLANE BANDSTAND - Our own MIKE SNOWDEN draws on his long experience of Rowallane to recount the heart-warming story of this lovely bandstand from its origins in Newcastle to its relocation and restoration in Saintfield.

In this illustrated talk, he will use his extensive investigative and reporting experiences to present "a contemporary view of wildlife and environmental issues across the world". Please note that due to Easter this talk has been put back by one week and will be preceded by a brief Annual General Meeting.
